Another way to look at SEO Marketing
The word niche is used really only in one context these days: “Find your niche!”
1. A special area of demand for a product or service.
2. A situation or activity specially suited to a person’s interests, abilities, or nature: “found her niche in life.”
- from the Free Dictionary – http://www.thefreedictionary.com/niche
Usually what someone means when they say that, is “find a place that you can be as close to unique as possible.” Years ago, finding your niche meant finding some place to work or live that you were comfortable. That seems like a big change in meaning to me, and I think it says something about how niche-finding can go wrong. One of the goals in search engine optimization (SEO) is to discover the correct keywords that will drive visitors — searchers — to your site. If you’re plowing snow, what words are people searching for when they need your services?
Unfortunately, in some businesses, like maybe real estate investing in Chicago, it’s hard to find a unique keyword related to your specialty. Competition is fierce, and even adwords are expensive during the snow season. Any attempt to “own” snow plowing in search engine results could be costly, if even possible. So, instead of attempting to find a unique niche, I suggest you find a comfortable niche. Craft your website using the right keywords. Optimize your site to include an easy to follow landing page, and optimize your code to make it easy for search engines to figure out how to list your business accurately in terms of location, services, products and contact information.
Once you have your website all snuggled into its comfortable niche, you’re positioned correctly for others whose need matches your service, in terms of location, service, and product and you’re much more likely to be discovered by a customer who is ready to jump when they see your website. You may not be the top ranked snow removal business in search results, but as the searched clicks through the people who are incorrectly positioned high due to attempts to game the system, your website will shine like a beacon to them.
